Suggestions wanted: Large world from LIDAR survey data

We're considering re-creating a real-world location inside Unigine. The technique would be to use a LIDAR survey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LIDAR) which would then be processed in to a textured mesh by the surveying company. The size would be around 8 square kilometers.

What would be the right Unigine approach to this. Would it simply be "make an FBX and convert to smesh?" Or should we be looking elsewhere?

The right approach depends on exactly what you're after...

- What level of detail / resolution do you want to achieve within that 8sq km? How much is the mesh being simplified?

- How will you typically view the world (i.e. first person / close to ground, or more of a flyover / birds eye view)?

- Do you need different LODs?

- Is it all outdoors? Is Object Terrain an option?

- If using a large static mesh, at the very least you probably want to partition it up into different surfaces so large areas can be culled when not visible.
