Splitting up shadows with different shadow parameters

Hello,

following the issue with the 'black ants artifacts' which are caused by the shadow (settings) of the world light, I am thinking of splitting the shadows for a) the characters and b| for the terrain and the decals. a) and b| should have different parameters, but basically act the 'sun'.

So I can create 2 world lights, with the same light parameters, which do the same (changing color, intensity, etc.) and as well setting different shadow parameters.

So lets say I use a) for the Terrain and the decals to throw shadows (and the light), and b| use for the character to be lit and do the self shadowing.

I think I understood the lightmasks to assign different lights to different objects and/or materials.

Can I do that for shadow and light seperately?

How can I achieve throwing b| a shadow onto the landscape without lighting it?

I tried to have a light with shadows and a black light color, but this doesnt seem to work.

Best.

Somehow I couldnt manage this ... but I was investigating further and have some solution.

First of all it has to be said, that those artifacts are 'generated' by the terrain. They are there all the time, but the Decals somehow amplify them, in my case towards black

The lines are very visible at a steep worldlight angle. The most visible at 90°.

There are several parameters, which influence those behavior. These are most of the shadow parameters.

I attach images, where e.g. I change the radius of the shadow.

So in a sense I couldnt get rid of the cause, but I could narrow it down. by changing the 'Shadow' value in the Terrain itself.

It is not completely solved and I still see some of those lines jumping at certain times, which is quite a showstopper.

Reducing the split shadow in the surface tab of the terrain could help as well.

The most effective setting was the 'Maximum Shadow Split' in the Surfaces Tab in the Terrain Node.

Setting it to 2 instead of 4 puts away the artifacts.

Hope this issue is through now. Would be great. Need to check the daytimes. (we use 24/7/365).

Best.
