clouds_base

A clouds_base material is used to create realistic volumetric clouds. It is applied to CloudLayer object.

Common#

Common Group

Layer Type Type of the cloud layer:
  • Infinite - a global layer of clouds spread inifinitely.
  • Defined - a layer of clouds of the specified size (limited to a certain area), this type is used for regional weather.
Layer Size Size of the cloud layer alonx X and Y axes, in units.

Available only when the Layer Type parameter is set to Defined
Layer Height Determines the height of the cloud layer, in units.

Clouds Shape Type Defines how the shape of the clouds is determined:
  • Coverage Texture - the shape of the clouds is defined by the built-in coverage texture.
  • 3D Texture - the shape of the clouds is defined by a custom 3D texture (can be used to create a cloud of a specific predefined shape).

Changing the value of this parameter toggles the set of available parameters in this group and in the Geometry group as well, it also determines whether the Geometry group is to be displayed.

Clouds Coverage

An RGB8 texture with the following channels:

Red channel stores a coverage map. It determines cloud density in a horizontal plane.

For a number of tuning options to work correctly, this map should not contain absolutely black pixels.
Green channel stores a stormcloud map. It determines areas of the coverage map, where storm clouds are located.
Blue channel stores a height map. It determines cloud height for each point of the coverage map.

Clouds Region Mask A separate single-channel texture to be used to define areas for the layer where the clouds are to be rendered and where they shouldn't (for regional weather). This texture is stretched to fit the region without any tiling.

Use Coverage Alpha Use the Alpha-channel of the coverage texture as a mask for rendering coverage of the cloud layer. You can use this mask to define areas for the layer where the clouds are to be rendered and where they shouldn't. It serves to reduce tiling of the clouds coverage. You can also use it to make the borders of the layer smoother (for regional weather) or to reduce tiling for infinite cloud layers.

Fix Coverage Tiling Determines if reduction of tiling for the clouds coverage texture is enabled. Such tiling becomes noticeable in large-scale worlds when observing clouds at significant distances. Geometry Group

Coverage Size Determines the size of the coverage texture.

Detail Wispy Billowy Gradient Controls the inversion of detail noise. With the default value of 0, the clouds form is as in the detail texture, increasing the value gradually inverts the values from wispy to billowy and from billowy to wispy.

Distorion Group

Distortion Intensity Intensity of distortion of the clouds shape based on the curl noise.
Distortion Size Scaling factor for distortion of the clouds shape based on the curl noise.
Wind Skew Intensity Defines intensity of cloud shape distortion in the direction of the wind (by default higher portions of clouds are affected more than the lower ones).
Wind Skew Height Gradient Defines which portion of the cloud layer height is affected by the wind skew distortion (Wind Skew Intensity parameter above). The value sets the height level starting from which the cloud shape shall be affected by the skew distortion (e.g. 0.5 - means the middle of the layer).

Shading Group

Self Shadows This state determines if a cloud layer casts shadows on itself. By default the state is enabled.

Sun Color By Depth

Color of lighting from the sun depending on how deep the light goes through the cloud.

  • Horizontal axis - light penetration depth.
  • Vertical axis - RGB channel values.
Anisotropy By Density

Higher anisotropy values result in more light passing through the clouds without being scattered in various directions.

The higher is the value the brighter the cloud will be when we look at the sun and the darker it will be when being looked at in the direction of the sun rays (from the sun).

  • Horizontal axis - cloud density.
  • Vertical axis - anisotropy values.
Ambient Color By Density

Color multiplier for ambient lighting depending on the cloud density.

  • Horizontal axis - cloud density.
  • Vertical axis - RGB channel values for ambient lighting color, Alpha - ambient lighting color saturation.
Ambient Occlusion By Coverage

Color multiplier for ambient lighting depending on the brightness of the Coverage texture.

  • Horizontal axis - Coverage texture value.
  • Vertical axis - RGB channel values for Ambient Occlusion, Alpha - lighting color saturation.
Ambient Occlusion By Coverage Falloff

Intensity gradient for the impact of the Ambient Occlusion By Coverage effect along the height of the cloud. Usually used to avoid darkening of ambient lighting at the top of the clouds.

  • Horizontal axis - height of the cloud from the lowest point at the bottom to the highest point at the top.
  • Vertical axis - RGB channel values for the impact of the Ambient Occlusion By Coverage effect.
Sun Intensity Determines intensity of the sun light affecting the clouds (from above). The higher is the value, the more sun lighting affects clouds. This parameter makes it possible to adjust the appearance of clouds by means of correction of sunlight intensity.
